Application Suggetions

National Honor Society (NHS) is more than just an honor roll. The The Dr. Roberta K. Gaines Chapter of the NHS has established rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Four Pillars of Application

Scholarship

Scholarship is a commitment to academic excellence. Students who embody this will demonstrate the commitment to time and effort that the pursuit of knowledge requires. For students to embody the pillar of scholarship they must understand the benefits of lasting knowledge and learning beyond formal education. Each member pledges to expand their world view through inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge embodied by scholarship.

Leadership

Be a leader in the classroom, during extracurriculars and in the community. A good leader must not merely take charge of a situation, they must be confident, willing to help others, and a good listener. A leader who leads by example will always be more successful and beloved than others who think leading is ordering others around. True leaders hold themselves accountable for their actions. Each member assumes responsibility for leadership to be a positive influence in the school and community.

Service

Serve not to complete your hours for NHS, but to help others. Service to others means not expecting compensation or recognition for your actions but doing them anyway to help the community. There are opportunities to do acts of service and kindness every day, members of NHS have a responsibility to make the most of these opportunities. Members must have the willingness to dedicate their time and effort toward helping the community.

Character

Treat others how you want to be treated. A person's character is their actions, thoughts and words. Strength in character will guide them through life and character can be built up by completing good deeds and making good habits. One’s strength of character is their dedication to making the “right” decisions. Members should demonstrate qualities like reliability and caring to prove themselves of good character.
